If you still get an error regarding Xorg.0.log.old, something is obviously very wrong because everyone has read-write access and therefore your X installation is totally screwed up (or your entire system). And also thank you mrtank for the fixvesa command. Why don't you install the nvidia proprietary driver? I seems related to /tmp for me though.
