Thanks for the help! I copied Echeddar (post #47 above) and reformatted the USB using the slow option on windows. I had previously formatted with the default settings using quick format in windows 7. I used the md5 instructions you provided and discovered that the signature of my downloaded version did not match the signature on the releases page.
I think the MD5s on the mirrors are what are incorrect. Why does low frequency RFID have a short read range? I'm re-downloading to see if I can reproduce the issue or otherwise explain it.
